It is now ‘very possible’ that Newcastle United could seal the signing of Leicester City star James Maddison, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.
The Lowdown: Magpies make summer bids
The Magpies are only expected to make a couple of additions during the January transfer window – if that – in order to aid what has become a genuine top-four challenge while still following Financial Fair Play regulations.
One player who has been constantly linked with a move to Newcastle is Maddison, who is enjoying an excellent season for Leicester, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in the Premier League.
It could be that the England international likes the idea of a fresh challenge after two failed bids from Tyneside this summer, and a new update suggests the Magpies could get their man.
The Latest: Transfer still ‘very possible’
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Talbot claimed that Maddison’s potential move to St James’ Park is now ‘very possible’:
“It is possible (January move). James Maddison’s contract is up in 2024.
“It does seem like, perhaps, he is trying to angle a move out of Leicester. He’s been there for a long time and he probably wants European football to advance his career, so it’s very possible that he will move to Newcastle.”

The Verdict: Brilliant January signing
Newcastle look well-placed to secure Champions League football but they could still do with an injection of creative brilliance this month to take them up a level, with the England international 98th percentile across Europe’s top five leagues in assists by midfielders.

Maddison, who shares the same agency as Kieran Trippier, looks like the ideal type of player to come in, adding more guile and goal threat to the middle of the park, perhaps proving to be the link man between Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in midfield up to the attacking players.
The Leicester maestro has proven Premier League quality, scoring 40 goals in the competition, and snapping him up in January would feel like a statement of intent.
